Our names are Dr. Páraic Kerrigan and Prof. Maria Pramaggiore. We
are researchers based in University College Dublin and Maynooth
University, respectively. Our individual research as well as previous
collaborative projects focus on LGBTQ/queer media representation.
It is our goal to ‘Wake the Hirschfeld’, producing a queer oral history
and archival study of on Dublin’s Hirschfeld Centre, in collaboration
with LGBTQ individuals and communities. We hope to tell the stories
that are so often forgotten, even during periods of political and social
progress for LGBTQ people. It is our belief that the Hirschfeld Centre,
which closed its doors as a social and political space for queer culture
in the late 1980s, played a role in the social changes around sexual
identities that Ireland has witnessed in the past several decades.
We are researchers and members of the LGBTQ community inviting
everyone to collaborate with us to tell the story of Dublin’s Hirschfeld
Centre and to reflect on the way it has been remembered and
forgotten.
